Built in 1957, Birch Meadow Elementary School was the second school constructed in the Birch Meadow area following Reading Memorial High School. The school is located on Arthur B. Lord Drive, which was named after a former superintendent of schools. Birch Meadow follows the Reading Public Schools' mission statement: "The Reading Public Schools strive to ensure that all students will have common challenging, meaningful learning experiences in the academics, health and wellness, the arts, community service, co-curricular activities and athletics. We will lead and manage our school community to reflect the values and culture of the Reading Community and guide and support our students to develop the appropriate skills, strategies, creativity and knowledge necessary to be productive informed independent citizens in a global society." The school has 22.8 teachers and 95.6% of them are licensed in their teaching assignments. There are 88 classes in core academic areas. Eric Sprung is the school's principal.
