Northern Bancorp owns and operates the banking chain of Northern Bank & Trust Company. Upon a petition from Thomas and James Mawn, a bank charter was approved for Woburn Bank and Trust Company on February 24, 1960. In 1987, the bank's expansion into surrounding communities necessitated that it amend its chartered name to Northern Bank and Trust Company in order to embody the region for which it serves.
