The North Reading Department of Public Works consists of eight divisions that oversee and maintain the towns infrastructure and public facilities. Those divisions include Administration; Cemetery, Parks and Grounds; Engineering; Machinery Maintenance; Road and Street; Solid Waste and Recycling; Town Buildings; and Water.
The Road and Street Division oversees and maintains the town's storm drainage system, sidewalks and 90 miles of roads. It also assists with snow removal and handles small construction projects.
The Recycling and Solid Waste Division oversees the town's curbside waste and recycling removal program. It also holds an annual Hazardous Waste Collection Day for town residents, and it maintains the town's lawn-waste disposal area at the Spindler Public Works Complex.
Along with housing the town's public works equipment, the Spindler Public Works Complex is the site of North Reading's composting center, which is open from April through December. The facility also is open Sundays in November for leaf disposal.
