The Public Works Department maintains the roads, streets and bridges throughout Boston's 10 districts. It handles everything from street cleaning and trash removal to plowing, sanding and salting the roads in the winter.
The department operates out of this administrative office on the seventh floor of City Hall and a headquarters at 400 Frontage Road. The latter is for districts 1 and 5, and the building contains the city's snowplows, sand and salt, and two garages for light and heavy maintenance. It is also the offices for the sanitary department and the street lighting department. Each district also has its own local garage.
Other Public Works Department services include recycling and trash removal, pot hole repairs, road repairs, deceased animal removal, motor vehicle accident cleanup, city vehicle towing, street and sidewalk permits, hazardous waste collection and more.
