Massachusetts General Hospital, or Mass General, was founded in 1811, making it the third oldest hospital in the country and the oldest and largest in New England. It is a teaching hospital and the vast majority of staff physicians are faculty members at Harvard Medical School.
Mass General has an annual research budget of $550 million. U.S News and World Report ranks Mass General as the third best hospital in the country, behind Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Mass General is also recognized in the top five hospitals for more than a dozen specialties, including ear, nose and throat; psychiatry; geriatrics; heart and heart surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology; gynecology; kidney disorders; opthalmology and rehabilitation.
