Established in 1980, the Department of Human Service Programs is operated by the City of Cambridge in Massachusetts, which also governs fire, emergency management, public works and police departments. The department provides a range of programs and services for infants, homeless parents, local employers and senior citizens, as well as nonprofit organizations. It offers neighborhood-based educational and enrichment programs for children and adults. The department, also known as DHSP, provides recreational, fuel assistance and substance abuse programs for senior citizens. Additionally, the Department of Human Service Programs serves people with physical disabilities. The department offers pre- and after-school child care and family support programs. Its senior assistance program also features benefits and insurance counseling, as well as home-delivered meals and grocery shopping shuttle.
