The Cambridge Water Department is a municipally owned and operated water utility serving more than 100,000 permanent residents of Cambridge, Mass. The department is under the general direction of the city manager. It is regulated by federal and state drinking water codes and is comprised of administration and business, engineering and program development, water quality and treatment operations, transmission and distribution and watershed protection divisions. The Cambridge Water Departments responsibilities include the protection of tributaries and reservoirs within and outside Cambridge City limits to ensure the highest raw water quality. The department also operates, maintains and improves an over 20-million gallon per day water treatment facility. It additionally protects purified water from potential hazardous contamination and removal of lead water services wherever possible. It is located in Cambridge, Mass.
