The Amherst Public Works Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure systems. It operates highways, water, wastewater, tree care, sewer maintenance, recycling, parks and commons, and streetlights and traffic signals divisions. The department offers recycling services for corrugated cardboards, newspapers, glass bottles, plastic jars, and aluminum and steel cans. It also provides collection services for household hazardous waste, including pesticides, varnishes, automotive fluids, lead acid batteries, wood preservatives and motor oil. In addition, the Amherst Public Works Department also offers maintenance services for city-owned parks, vehicles and sanitary sewer systems. Its water division conducts regular tests to monitor drinking water quality. The department is also responsible for the installation and repair of street signs, traffic signals and streetlights.
