Indian Health Service is responsible for $4 billion budget that provides medical and public health services to 2.5 million members of the Indian tribes and Alaska natives. The Rockville location oversees 33 hospitals, 59 health centers and 50 health stations. This requires 2,700 nurses, 900 physicians, 400 engineers, 500 pharmacists and 300 dentists. The IHS was formed in 1955 when it took over the health care responsibilities of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The office is located at the intersection of Twinbrook Parkway and Rockville Pike.
