SunTrust can be traced back to Farmers Bank of Alexandria, Virginia in 1811. The most direct corporate ancestor is the Trust Company of Georgia in 1981. In 1985, the Trust Company was merged with SunBanks. The individual branches of the merged company abopted the SunTrust name in 1995.
