Established in 1964, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center is one of the leading research and education centers based on ecological processes to sustain life on land and sea. The center occupies more than 2, 800 acres of space. It has a staff of more than 15 scientists and supports a team of over 180 researchers, technicians and students. Its professionals have expertise in the areas of agriculture, forestry, and commercial fishing. The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center offers research programs on migratory birds, American continents and human health issues. The center is a member of the Association of Ecosystems Research Centers, National Association of Marine Laboratories and Chesapeake Bay Information Network. It is located in Edgewater, Md.
