Platform Arts Center in Baltimore, MD was founded three years ago by Abbey and Lydia, with the aim of creating an accessible and inclusive gallery space for emerging and established artists to showcase their work and stories. With a focus on questioning the traditional role of galleries, Platform provided an incubation space for programming and curatorial ideas, while empowering artists to take charge of their own exhibitions and sales. After 30 exhibitions and countless programs, Platform has decided to pass on their space to Baltimore Youth Arts, an artist-run after-school program that provides artistic and professional opportunities to youth, ages 14-22, who will continue to operate the gallery alongside their art studio in the basement.
Platform's final exhibition, "Here," curated by Malcolm Peacock and Markele Cullins, showcases multidisciplinary work from recent graduates of Baltimore School for the Arts, Carver School for Arts and Sciences, and other independent artists. The exhibition aims to break down barriers within the arts community by engaging artists and audiences beyond location and age, exploring content that is essential to the identities and experiences of the artists. The exhibition opens on July 22nd at Platform Gallery, with performances by Lynn Hunter on August 4th, 5th, and 6th.
