It is governed by the state of Maryland. The department operates the state s detention center and prisons. It employs a staff of more than 11,000 people and offers a range of rehabilitative services. The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services also offers victim support and fingerprinting services. It conducts a firearms safety training program, as well as background checks. The department also administers the state s central booking and intake facility. Its correction division supervises over 23,000 offenders throughout the state.
