The Maryland Department of Agriculture is a part of the state government of Maryland. It administers a range of programs and services that preserve and protect agricultural resources, as well as promote agriculture and consumer confidence. The department conducts regulatory, service and educational activities that protect the environment. The Maryland Department of Agriculture also offers a variety of activities that promote the economic well-being of farmers and food and fiber processors, as well as businesses engaged in agriculture-related operations. It operates a marketing division that identifies and develops local, national and international marketing opportunities for farmers and agricultural producers. The department provides apiary registration, nursery inspection, organic certification, and horse stable, veterinary and business licensing services. In addition, the Maryland Department of Agriculture maintains an animal health section that is responsible for safeguarding the health of food producing animals and horses.
