Members of Maryland's Wing of the Civil Air Patrol occupies a cluster of seemingly deserted buildings on Zachary Lane. But those buildings have housed more than 1,500 volunteers who are part of the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. The patrol performs continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions. Last fiscal year, members of the Maryland wing flew 42 search and rescue missions and were credited with 31 finds, according to the group's website.
