One of seven centers offered by the Anne Arundel County Department of Aging, the Annapolis Senior Activity Center boasts a membership of 3500 seniors, and sees 300-400 members come through its doors each day during its busy fall season. Run by Director Becky Batta and Office Manager Mary Crowner, the center is staffed almost entirely by volunteers. The center offers a large variety of classes, including Tai Chi, art and basic computer courses, which are taught primarily by faculty from Anne Arundel County Community College. The center also has a medical suite, where seniors can go to have their blood pressure, blood sugar and hearing checked. Amaryllis Harper, a member of the center, said the best part of being a member is making new friendships. "As you get older, your friends die and it's important to meet new ones," Harper said as she worked on a painting in art class.
