The Maine State Police, established in 1925, is the state's largest police agency with an authorized full-time staff of more than 340 sworn personnel, including troopers and colonels. It maintains various specialized units, such as tactical, underwater recovery, crisis negotiation and incident management. The Maine State Police also has an Evidence Response Team (ERT) that examines major scenes to identify and establish the interrelationships of physical evidence involved in the scene. With a location in Alfred, Maine, the agency provides various gaming and liquor licenses, professional and weapons permits, and mechanic and vehicle inspection certifications. In addition, the Maine State Police operates a full-service nationally accredited crime laboratory that maintains criminal records and statistics, as well as the sex offender registry.
