Diversified Communications
Diversified Communications is a privately held, family-owned business that operates in the broadcasting, exhibition, publishing and emerging-media industries. Diversified Communications began with broadcasting in 1949 when former Maine Governor Horace A. Hildreth acquired WABI-AM radio in Bangor, Maine. In 1953, WABI-TV became the first television broadcasting station in Maine and a CBS affiliate in 1955. In October 1976, Diversified Communications purchased WCJB-TV (ABC) in Gainesville, Fla., and then acquired WPDE-TV (ABC) in Florence, S.C., in 1985. Diversified also operates WWMB-TV (UPN) in Myrtle Beach, S.C., under special agreement.The publishing division started in 1970 when Diversified Communications merged with a New England publisher. Three regional commercial fishing magazines were combined and resulted in National Fisherman magazine. The portfolio has grown to include seven trade titles that serve markets in the United States and Europe. Fish Expo Boston, Diversified s first trade show, was launched in 1970. Diversified owns and operates more than 40 trade shows worldwide.
