The Kennebec County Correctional Facility is a 151-bed detention center that works under the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office, which was established in 1799. The sheriff's office is a full-service law enforcement agency preserves peace and safety and safeguards citizens rights. It supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the usage of illegal drugs, gang activities and violent behavior. The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office coordinates with the Sexual Assault Crisis & Support Center and the Family Violence Project. The sheriff s office employs more than 120 staff members.
