Founded in 1969, The Greater Portland Council of Governments is a nonprofit organization that provides a range of planning and municipal services to the municipalities and public service agencies of the Greater Portland area. Its members include 25 municipalities. It promotes rail, bus, ferry and carpool transportation and provides transportation and land use planning technical assistance to transit providers, municipalities and the public. Its community development services include planning and strategic assistance for comprehensive and downtown plans, project development, grant writing and professional development opportunities. The Greater Portland Council of Governments maintains a data center to provide information on southern Maine and its communities, including public infrastructure, demographics, education, housing and the economy. It maintains a location in Portland, Maine.
