Emera Maine is a regulated electric transmission and distribution utility. The company is wholly owned by Emera Inc., a full-service energy company based in Nova Scotia.Emera Maine came to existence on January 1, 2014 when Bangor Hydro Electric Company and Maine Public Service merged to become one company. Our primary business is the efficient, safe and reliable delivery of electricity to customers in northern and eastern Maine. We install, operate and maintain transmission and distribution infrastructure such as poles and wires, substations, and meters. We also offer programs and tools to help our customers to use energy more efficiently. Our transmission services are regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and distribution services are regulated by the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC).We do not generate or sell the electricity that we deliver to retail customers. Since Maine restructured its electric industry in the late 1990s, we have not owned electric generation facilities. Consumers have their choice of retail electricity suppliers or a MPUC-administered standard offer.
