Established in 1930, Baxter State Park is a wildlife sanctuary spread over an area of more than 204,000 acres. The park s area of more than 150,000 acres is managed as a wildlife sanctuary and over 28,000 acre is managed as the Scientific Forest Management Area. Additionally, it has nearly 22,000 acres of area where hunting and trapping are allowed under the deed of trust. The park has more than 40 peaks and ridges and features over 180 miles of trails for hiking and mountain climbing. Baxter State Park operates more than 10 campgrounds and also has various backcountry sites for backpackers. Its store offers books, maps, baseball caps and DVDs. Baxter State Park is located in Millinocket, Maine.
