Headquartered in Louisville, Ky., Jefferson County Sheriff s Office was founded in 1781 as a county agency established by the Virginia legislature for the Commonwealth of Virginia. With an authorized strength of more than 200 paid deputies, over 100 reserve deputies, and more than 60 civilian support personnel, Jefferson County Sheriff s Office is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in Kentucky. It offers various community service programs, including Be Thumbody child identification program, and Project ChildSafe, a nationwide program that promote safe firearms handling, and storage practices by partnering with various organizations to distribute free safety kits to gun owners in all states. It also provides People At Risk Today, Needing Emergency Response 911 program, that offers free cell phones to people in the community who live in at-risk situations. Its fatal-vision program is offered to youth, and helps promote safe driving, and drug and alcohol awareness.
