The Kentucky Department of Transportation works to provide an environmentally sound, multimodal transportation system, and human and financial resources for individuals. It maintains a communication center that offers real-time traffic and travel information. The department supports a state bicycle and pedestrian program that promotes and facilitates the increased use of nonmotorized modes of transportation and develops facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists. The Kentucky Department of Transportation administers public education, promotional and safety programs for using such facilities. The Kentucky Department of Transportation additionally supports a statewide transportation improvement program that identifies the funding and scheduling of transportation projects and programs. It operates an office of project development that is responsible for projects in the development phase, including planning, environmental components, consultant prequalification and selection, acquisition and utility relocation.
