New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) recently partnered with the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity (CEHC) at the University at Albany for a capstone course that provided students with hands-on experience in preparing for and responding to cyber attacks. Throughout the semester, students developed case studies on past cybersecurity attacks, which were included in the participant packet for NYCEM's annual citywide continuity of operations (COOP) virtual conference. Students also had the opportunity to earn credit by serving on NYCEM's team during the conference, contributing to evaluation and improvement planning.
The partnership between NYCEM and CEHC allowed students to gain practical experience in emergency preparedness and cybersecurity, while also helping NYCEM in its efforts to mitigate the impacts of cyber disruptions on essential service delivery. The course provided students with a realistic experience managing professional projects and relationships, empowering them to drive change in the field. This collaboration highlighted the interplay between COOP, cybersecurity, and emergency management, which is a high priority for municipalities across the nation.
