Commonwealth Credit Union is the largest credit union in Kentucky. CCU is a cooperative nonprofit financial institution owned and operated by its members exclusively to meet their financial needs. Membership is greater than 87,000 people from across the state and around the world. The credit union's doors opened on April 2, 1951, with 122 shareholders, $2,700 in assets and a single volunteer. By 1976, six people were employed and membership had grown to almost 6,000. Since 1976, CCU's assets have grown from $2.8 million to more than $598 million. The credit union has members from over 250 agencies in Kentucky, including boards of education, health departments, city and county government and numerous state government agencies. CCU s services include: savings accounts, certificates of deposit and individual retirement accounts, savings bonds, checking accounts, credit cards, loans, indirect lending and safe deposit boxes. It has several locations in Frankfort, Ky. and a service center in Lexington, Ky.
