One day in June of 1919 in Lodi, Calif., an entrepreneur named Roy Allen mixed up a batch of root beer and sold his first mug of this beverage for one nickel. More than 70 years later, A&W Root Beer is one of the world's number one selling root beers and is still mixed fresh daily and sold at hundreds of A&W Restaurants. By 1933, the beverage was such a success that there were more than 170 franchised outlets operating in the Midwest and west. By 1950, there were more than 450 A&W Restaurants operating nationwide and by 1960 the number swelled to nearly 2,000. A standard core menu for the restaurants was introduced in 1978, which featured beef hamburgers, chicken, hot dogs, sides, salad bars, ice cream bars and A&W Root Beer.
