Maternal-Fetal Medicine, a part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of The University of Kansas Medical Center, is a clinical perinatal referral center. The center specializes in the evaluation and treatment of fetal abnormalities. It also offers a variety of after-birth care services. The center s team of certified physicians and researchers performs platelet transfusions, drainage procedures, intrauterine shunt catheters and other fetal surgeries. Maternal-Fetal Medicine additionally offers fetoscopy, a procedure in which a tiny fiber-optic camera allows the direct visualization of fetus. It performs endovaginal ultrasound, fetal biopsy and molecular biologic and invasive testing for single gene disorders. The center provides laser surgeries, drug and gene therapies and fetal blood transfusion. In addition, it offers the diagnosis and treatment of fetal infection, hyperthyroidism, arrythmias and heart failure. The University of Kansas Medical Center is headquartered in in Kansas City, Kan.
