The City of Manhattan covers an area of more than 15 square miles and serves a population of over 50,000. It provides a range of services in the areas of education, trade, health care, entertainment, culture and communication to residents and business. The city features airport, zoo, parks, recreational facilities, museums and trails. It maintains the Manhattan Department of Fire Services, which offers a variety of public education, safety awareness, and fire safety and prevention programs to the general public. The department is responsible for providing trade licenses, building permits, new construction plan reviewing, and housing and nuisance inspection. The City of Manhattan additionally operates finance, community development, public works and human resources departments.
