Founded in 1868, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines has grown to eight branches that serve 56,000 individuals. Its programs build character and skills in kids, as well as strengthen family relationships and promote healthy lifestyles. In addition to offering a wide variety of programs, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines also provides the largest transitional housing shelter in the state. The YMCA is a nonprofit organization that works with people of all ages, races and abilities. Thanks to YMCA contributors, no one is turned away from basic need-base services due to the inability to pay.
