Founded in 1904, University Hygienic Laboratory, also known as (UHL), is an environmental and public health laboratory serving the residents of Iowa. It educates its environmental and public health partners about the presence of infectious diseases and how to prevent them from spreading throughout the population. The laboratory also teaches laboratorians on the issues related to the prevention of diseases, such as pandemic influenza, typhoid, diphtheria, rabies and tuberculosis. University Hygienic Laboratory also offers internships, fellowships and job shadowing opportunities. It performs analyses on samples, including human clinical specimens, air, drinking water, wastewater, soil, sediment, industrial effluents, oil and fish. The laboratory functions as a consultative and analytical support facility for state agencies, health professionals and citizens. University Hygienic Laboratory is part of the University of Iowa. It maintains one of its facilities in Ankeny, Iowa.
