The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, which serves Kalona, Riverside and Johnson counties, is 400 acres in size and receives approximately 125,000 tons of trash each year. Yard waste, tires, lead acid batteries, appliances and oil are banned from the landfill, but there are recycling programs for disposal of these items. Garbage disposal rates vary according to residency within Johnson County, weight of garbage and type of garbage. The landfill offers tours designed to inform residents on how to reduce waste.
