Incorporated in 1868, the Valparaiso Fire Department serves an area of more than 25 square miles and over 35,000 residents. With 50 full-time firefighters providing fire, medical and rescue services, it operates two fire stations and has engine squads and a command unit. The department responds to approximately 2,000 emergency calls annually and conducts fire safety inspections of commercial properties, reviews site plans and provides fire safety education. The Valparaiso Fire Department assists in preventing fire through community awareness programs, such as open houses, presentations at local schools and online information. It also offers employment opportunities to the citizens of Valparaiso, Ind.
