It all started when... Kit Newkirk opened the first Game Preserve store October 1, 1980 in an old house in the funky Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis. The shelves were stocked with Monopoly, Scrabble, chess, backgammon, Pente, and playing cards. Trivial Pursuit would soon be invented. Dungeons and Dragons was a little known newcomer. Bill Lorton joined her as a partner in early 1981. In 1983, we decided to move the Game Preserve about a mile from Broad Ripple to the Galleria at Glendale, Indianapolis' oldest enclosed mall. The move brought many new customers to the store and made it a viable business. After five years at Glendale, we built in the Fashion Mall at Keystone Crossing, two miles north of the Glendale store. In 1989 we added a second location in the Greenwood Park Mall, south of Indianapolis. After five years in the mall, we moved the store north on US 31 to Stop 12 Road, where you can still find it. In 1991, an employee came forward with the idea of adding a third store in Bloomington in the newly renovated Fountain Square Mall on the courthouse square.
