The Delaware County Jail has been in operation since January 1988. The jail was originally designed to house 50 men and nearly 10 women. In 1991, it became necessary to double bunk the remaining block. The jail can house nearly 90 male inmates and nearly 15 female inmates. Housing an ever-increasing inmate population has been a continuing challenge for the Delaware County Sheriff's Office. The commissioners approved a $7 million jail expansion, which allows for the housing of nearly 100 more male and nearly 25 more female inmates. Located in Muncie, Ind., Delaware County Jail employs nearly 175 people.
