The Allen County Superior Court was established in 1816 when Indiana became a state. The court has as its basis a constitutional amendment that was ratified by the people in 1970 and which took effect in 1972. The amendment represented an almost complete rewriting of the 1851 Constitution's Judicial Article. The Allen County Superior Court is served by a Chief Justice and four Associate Justices. The constitution provides that the number of Associate Justices may be increased to eight by action of the legislature. The Allen County Superior Court s incumbent Justices are subject to statewide yes-or-no votes on the question of their retention in office. The Allen County Superior Court maintains its headquarters in Fort Wayne, Ind.
