The Illinois Department of Transportation, also known as IDOT, is governed by the State of Illinois. The department is responsible for the planning, construction and maintenance of transportation networks that include highways, bridges, airports, and public transit and rail freight systems. It manages an aeronautics division that is responsible for coordinating and implementing programs concerning air safety and airport construction. The Illinois Department of Transportation also operates a traffic safety division that develops and oversees regulations in the areas of crash reporting and vehicle inspection. The department administers the Illinois Adopt-A-Highway Program, which educates and encourages people to stop littering.
