Saint Michael's Church was organized by a group of Carpatho-Russian immigrants who came to America in the early 1900's. The Very Rev. Father Samuel J. Sherry, the church pastor, says there are more than 80 Orthodox churches in the Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana area, established by different ethnic groups.
Saint Michael's Church was originally located in Chicago, on Campbell Avenue near Fullerton Avenue, with the first Divine Liturgy held in 1914. The parish eventually relocated to Niles, and in September, 1966, dedicated a new church building at its current location. Church membership today is not limited to any one particular ethnic background.
The church is set back from the street down a long driveway. It has a large parking area and green space on which the congregation holds an annual picnic. The church interior features extensive, detailed and beautiful art in the Orthodox tradition.
Father Sherry said it is important for young people to have a good start in life by learning Christian values. The church offers Sunday school starting at the preschool level.
