History
SitStayRead is a 501(c)(3) that brings dogs into 1st through 4th Grade Chicago classrooms to help struggling young readers develop critical early literacy skills. For more than ten years, we've been bringing dogs and volunteers into Chicago Public Schools where at least 90% of students are receiving free or reduced-price lunches and fewer than 40% of the 3rd Graders are reading at grade level. The children read dog-themed books to the dogs, then they write their own stories related to what they just read. According to an independent study conducted by Loyola, children in our program make 47.8% greater fluency gains than their non-participating peers.
