The Winnebago County Forest Preserve District maintains more than 30 sites, which include nature preserves, golf courses, campgrounds, environmental education centers, botanical gardens, hiking trails and boat launches. The district also provides opportunities for various activities, such as picnicking, bird watching, skiing and snowmobiling. Its preserves offer native prairies, woodlands, wildflowers, wetlands, dolomite cliffs and streams. Additionally, the preserves include waterways that provide opportunities for canoeing, rafting and fishing. The Winnebago County Forest Preserve District also maintains campgrounds that provide various amenities, including electric hookups, paved access roads, running water, pay phones, dump stations and restrooms. The district covers an area of more than 9,000 acres and maintains its office in Rockford, Ill.
