If you've got a crack in the sidewalk, a dead tree in the parkway, water running into your yard from a nearby parking lot or a similar problem, call the Public Works Department. Its job is to maintain the village's streets, alleys, trees on village property, water mains, sewers and more.
Scott Jochim, the village's director of Public Works, says the department has employees who oversee forestry, streets, sewer and water.
The department gets calls ranging from "How do I get rid of a wasp's nest?" to "My roof is leaking, what should I do?" from new homeowners.
Public Works also operates the village's courtesy transportation service, known as the Niles Free Bus.
The department uses its 30-plus trucks year-round. In late summer and early fall, they are used for picking up branches; in November, the department converts its equipment so it can be used for snow removal. The trucks include street sweepers, trailers and vactors, which are pieces of equipment used to clean sewers.
