Formally organized into the Mokena Fire Protection District in 1917, fire brigades have existed in town in one form or another since 1883, when the village acquired its first hose. Led by Fire Chief Ted Golden, the Fire Protection District is one the few fire departments in Illinois accredited by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
In addition to responding to assistance calls, the Fire Protection District also holds regular CPR and first aid classes, does fire safety presentations for schools and organizations, and participates in children's and community activities.
