Harry F. Marks became sole proprietor of the Wood River branch in 1945. With remodeling and improvements in 1940 and 1948, Marks Mortuary had become a landmark business in Wood River. Harry sold his business to his sons, Harry Edwin Marks and William C. Marks in 1957. The two brothers continued to operate the funeral business and ambulance service in the community. A 1966 renovation of the existing house provided an expanded service chapel to the facility to accommodate nearly 120 people. The mortuary was operated out of remodeled building across the street until the construction was completed. The ambulance service was ceased in the early 1980's. William C. "Bill" Marks died in January 1986, leaving Ed and wife, Patricia (Gerdes) Marks as owners and operators of the mortuary. Bill's youngest son Martin L. Marks earned his degree in Mortuary Science in 1987 from St. Louis Community College. He joined his uncle as the third generation Marks to serve in the funeral industry. Harry Edwin Marks died in January 2002, leaving Patricia, his wife and Martin, his nephew, to carry on the family business. " Treat the bereaved families like they were your family. When you help a family, remember that you are taking care of the most precious they have." -- Harry F. Marks This is the philosophy that has been passed on from generation to generation Marks Mortuary
