HistoryChicago Public Library first opened its doors January 1, 1873, at the southeast corner of LaSalle and Adams streets, in an abandoned water tower that survived the Great Chicago Fire. Now 81 locations strong, Chicago Public Library reaches every neighborhood of the city.
