Giant Steps is a school serving students affected by autism disorders. The school educates its students through individualized programs to meet the needs and capabilities of each individual. In addition to academics a student's curriculum may include social work, and speech or music therapy. Giant Steps has elementary, junior high and high school programs, and are in the works of establishing an official "transition" program for its 18-22 year-old students. The facility doubles as a training location, hosting seminars and classes for first responders who may encounter those affected by autism.
The school was founded as a home school in 1996, and moved into its Lisle location in September 2009. In the last year its enrollment has doubled to over 90 students, who represents 30 school districts from across the region.
Giant Steps receives almost a third of its funding from outside donations and volunteer efforts. They recently installed their first playground in the school's history with the help of 200 volunteers and KaBOOM!, a playground-funding organization. Giant Steps also hosts two major fundraisers each year, and receive 10 percent of the proceeds from Mullen's Bar and Grill sales the first Thursday of each month.
