History
The First United Methodist Church, commonly know as the Chicago Temple, is older than the city of Chicago, founded in 1831. Today the church worships in the fifth building to be located at the corner of Clark and Washington. Designed by Holabird and Roche, the cornerstone was laid in 1922 and the building was dedicated in 1924. The main sanctuary on the ground level is open for prayer and meditation everyday from 7 am to 7 pm. A free tour of the building is offered Monday -Saturday at 2 pm.
Specialties
We welcome all people to the life of this congregation. We believe that we are all in need of God's love and grace and that God, through Jesus Christ, intends the church to be a community that incarnates love, grace and justice for all people. Holding true to that belief, we welcome and encourage all persons, including persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities, in every aspect of our Christian life together.
