History
On March the 26th, 1901 at a meeting in a downtown Elgin office 32 men pledged charter membership to a proposed Elgin Country Club. A week later they had 82 charter members. On April 1st, 1901 the club officially organized with all formal arrangements completed. They leased an 80 acre portion of Weld farm at $2 per acre for 5 years; and sent for Tom Bendelow, the golf course architect. They cleared over 50 trees, built fairways, traps, greens, and built a $1500 Club House with dining room and showers. Play was started on the original 9 hole course on May 10, 1901. The original 9 holes are still in play with some alterations. In 1928 and 1929 the present Club House was erected and the course was expanded to 18 holes. In 1948 old number 7, number 8, and number 9 located north of the club house were turned into practice areas and number 3, 5, and 6 holes were substituted so as to make the course a little less hilly...
