The Illinois Department of Corrections works to protect the public from criminal offenders through a system of incarceration and supervision. It securely segregates offenders from society, assures offenders of their constitutional rights and maintains programs to enhance the success of offenders' reentry into society. The department operates more than 25 adult correctional centers, as well as various work and boot camps and adult transition centers. The Illinois Department of Corrections is responsible for over 80,000 adult inmates and parolees. It maintains a victims services unit that provides information, assistance and support to the victims of crime and victimized employees. With an office in DuQuoin, Ill., the department supports the incarcerated veterans transition program that serves to support re-entry by accessing the strengths and needs of veteran offenders and identifying programs and services to support their transition into society.
