HistoryHI-Chicago is a nonprofit company and a proud part of the international network of over 4000 Hostelling International hostels around the world. 2009 is the 100th anniversary of hostelling which started in Germany in 1909, and 2009 is the 75th anniversary of hostels in the USA. HI-Chicago opened in 2000 in the South Loop Education District. It serves the community by bringing a world of travelers to Chicago and by teaching cultural understanding to local students. HI-USA mission: To help all, especially the young, gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. HI-Chicago has preserved and showcased the historic 1886 George F. Kimball building for future generations to use and appreciate.
