Established in 1818, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department offers services for traffic, home and Internet safety, as well as identity theft. It maintains patrol, detention, investigations, civil, animal control and records divisions. The department organizes the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, which is an educational program designed to equip school children with knowledge about drug abuse, the consequences of abuse and skills for resisting peer pressure. The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department has a communications center that serves as the public safety answering point for the county and central dispatching center for its emergency response agencies. The department supports and conducts several volunteer programs, including reserve deputy, chaplain, and search and rescue.
